Immunity from civil suits
Guns for everyone
First off, I don't have a problem with guns. I grew up in North Texas where everyone has a gun. I had a .22 growing up and my grandpa gave me a 16 gague shotgun for my 16th birthday. I wish I knew what happened to that .22 but I still have the shotgun. I was also in the Army for 20 years so lets just say that I have more than a passing familiarity with firearms. I must admit I do have a problem with letting someone build a personal arsenal but that is a topic for another time.
That being said, this is not really about guns. I have never understood this kind of legislation. Why do we need a law that says a certain group of people who make a certain type of product, whether that be the pre-gurgitated goop we call fast food or an assault weapon? What is it about these people or these products that give them special status not enjoyed by say the ladder or blender manufacturers, have immunity from being sued? Does the fact that they are a popular target mean they need protection or that they need to clean up their act?
I know our judicial system is a mess but giving people license to do whatever they want and not be subject to the same consequences the rest of us are is just flat wrong.

I'd like to hear Bill Frist explain how this legislation is in anyway 'for the people'.

It that Queso from our UO days?
Guns are different from ladders and blenders. Handguns are specifically designed to hurt/kill people, ladders and blenders are not.
I'm not sure what your point is but to me, that makes the gun manufacturers even more responsible for who gets one.
Ladders are made to be used to climb to high places. If someone beats someone to death with a ladder, it would be a little hard to prove that the ladder maker was negligent in who he allowed to get a ladder.
Guns are made to kill things. That's their only purpose, to kill things. Yes, they are used for protection but that protection is only provided because the gun can kill. The manufacturer of a lethal weapon has a certain responsibility to ensure that his product doesn't wind up in the hands of the wrong person. If a gun manufacturer negligently loses a buttload of guns which are then used in a crime, don't you think they should be held liable for that? What happens if the ladder guy loses a truckload of ladders compared to the gun guy losing a truck load of guns?
That really is beside the point. If our legal system is broken, it needs to be fixed. Passing legislation to protect one small group, not because they need protection but because they happen to have a strong lobby is not the way to go about it. What we end up with is an even more broken legal system and a group of corporations who now get a free ticket to do whatever they want.
I agree that the legal system is broken but this just flat doesn't help.
