Nationwide ID

How did this one slip by?

Real ID

Personally, I'm all for it. I have a different card for everything I have to do, drivers license, military ID, credit cards, Sams card, health insurance card, dental plan card, calling card, auto club card, etc. Heaven help me if I don't have one when I need it.

I don't care if the government keeps track of me. I believe they're already doing it if they deem me to be of some importance. Anyone reading my file is gonna be bored to death anyway so who really cares. I'd love it if they put one of those RFID tags under my skin so I could just swipe it when I needed to pick up a gallon of milk.

I know all the issues around that but they already have the power to track and record you if they want to, why not make our lives a little easier in the process? In the words of Scott McNealy, "Privacy is a myth, get over it."

One problem I can see with the national ID card is that everybody will want you to use it for everything. I went in to a hardware store the other day to buy bolts and when I went to pay the first thing the guy asked me was 'can I have your zipcode?' I told him no and he was kinda annoyed, like I was being an asshole (and maybe I was, sorta). There are already businesses that require thumb prints from their customers and they will refuse service to people that won't submit to this. I can see a time where legislation goes through that allows stores (walmart) to require you to scan your 'national ID' card everytime you buy something. Or, if they put one of those rfid tags in the card they won't even have to have you scan the card, they'll just read your info out of your wallet. Cashier scans your purchases and then scans you.

Do I need a tinfoil hat?

Also, this thing was attached as a rider to a bill asking for more money for soldiers, which makes it very hard for any politician to vote against it. I really hate that rider to bills shit. That needs to be changed asap.

If I pay cash for something, I don't give them anything but the cash. I don't give a flying fuck what their corporate policy is, I get the product, they get the cash and that's all I owe them. Anyone who gives me even a dirty look just lost a customer.

If I use a credit card, I give them the info they ask for. I'm not sure why but I'm more forgiving when I use plastic.

There is a new trend that I actually like and that is that a lot of stores now ask for a picture ID when I use a credit card. That is where you might be right, this national ID will be used to validate your identity when you use plastic.

Cash however, is the great equalizer. A $20 bill should be all the identity I need.

Oh, I forgot to mention the rider thing.

If I had to pick my biggest pet peeve about the way our government works, that would probably be in the top 3. It is a totally ludicrous concept that some national ID rider can be stuck in a military spending bill. Talk about outright flim flammery. That needs to be changed and change quick but as with most other problems of this magnitude, the people who benefit have to make the change so you know that just flat isn't going to happen.

Maybe I should run for Congress.

used to validate your id and keep track of exactly what you purchased, forever.

No, they look at my drivers license and make sure it is the same name and picture then hand it back to me. They don't record anything off my license.

What you're talking about is already done via my credit card.
